The 1955 plan to modernise Britain’s railways set in motion a cascade of mass dieselisation. A handful of designs would come from this decision, but none were as striking as the appropriately named “Western”.
Designated the Class 52, the “Western” proved the potential of hydraulic power, pulling express services through Western England with ease, and capable of 90mph operation thanks to its double-engine setup.
